Five Swords Mortar and Pestle

This mortar and pestle is crafted from Aji stone, an extraordinary granite mined from the foothills of Mount Goken. The mountain gets its name from its distinctive peaks, likened to “five swords” (goken). The celebrated hardness of this dintinct speckled granite is softened into a pestle and a mortar, cooking tools used since the Stone Age.

The product is made with Aoishima Aji Stone by AOISHIMA Inc., founded by artisan Chikara Ninomiya, who specializes in crafting Aji stone, a granite variant known for its finely-woven crystals, bluish hue, and resilience. AOISHIMA upholds the 400-year legacy of this rare material with a high level of expertise, from mining to the craft of fabricating the final product out of the hardest granite in the world.
