Outside In (Asterisks)

An unfashionable teapot found on a dust filled shelf of an old shop was picked up and meticulously transformed into a special gift for Singapore’s first female President, Madam Halimah Yacob, that was presented during this year’s President*s Design Award. Commissioned by DesignSingapore Council, this work is part of the Outside In series that transforms out-dated porcelain vessels by strategically removing the original glaze surface to expose the white porcelain bisque underneath. The resulting new textured pattern on the white bisque is appropriated from the asterisk (*) symbol found in the President*s Design Award logo, while part of the original glaze is preserved so that the contrast between the old and new is observable.
